Azerbaijani deputy chairperson has been elected to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women for the first time

Mr. Elgun Safarov, Doctor of Philosophy in Law was elected to the position of  Deputy Chairperson at the 78th session of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women on February 15, 2021.

The CEDAW Committee was established in accordance with Article 17 of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. The Committee consists of 23 experts on issues covered by the Convention. Committee members participate in the preparation of countries' reports on the protection of women's rights and equal opportunities and are represented in working groups.

Azerbaijan was elected a member of the CEDAW Committee in 2018 for the first time.  Mr.Elgun Safarov, an expert on international law will serve as deputy chairperson of the Committee from February 15, 2021.

We would like to note that Mr.  Elgun Safarov has been representing the country in the UN, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and other international organizations for almost 18 years in the field of human rights and freedoms, international law, international humanitarian law, protection of women's and children's rights and others. At the same time, Mr. Safarov represented the country in the OSCE meeting   against human trafficking and domestic violence, protection of international peace and security, development of women's entrepreneurship and other areas.

For many years, the expert has participated in the activities of the State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs  and the Commission on Gender Equality of the Council of Europe (2007-2018). Mr. Safarov taught international law, family law, international humanitarian law and other subjects at Baku State University and the State Customs Academy. The expert has published more than 50 scientific researches and studies in English, Russian and Azerbaijani languages.
